XAVER VON ADELSHOFEN

The Guaiquinima Tales

Born 1630 or 1631 in Southern Bavaria, Xaver von Adelshofen was taken on as a novice by the Jesuit Collegium Willibaldinum at Eichstätt at the age of fourteen. In 1650, while deeply immersed in his philosophy and theology studies, he was forced to flee the order as his relationship with a woman accused of witchcraft became known. An eventful journey took him to the Netherlands, where he reached Amsterdam by December of the same year. Being curious by nature, he joined the blossoming Enlightenment movement led by René Descartes, Constantijn and Christiaan Huygens, Nicholaes Tulp, Anna Maria van Schurmann, Rembrandt van Rijn, Franziskus van den Enden, Baruch de Spinoza, and many others. Later voyages took him across the Atlantic Ocean into the New World and beyond. As it was not uncommon in his circles, Xaver von Adelshofen has meticulously laid down his most personal memories in a diary spanning at least six decades. Fortunately, a handful of these volumes proved salvageable after being discovered in the last decade of the 20th century (an adventurous story in itself). The translation from Latin into German and English is an ongoing project. Xaver's observations, THE GUAIQUINIMA TALES, as he referred to them, seem as valuable today as they were back then. The first volume, THE JESUIT, and its German original, DER JESUIT, are finally available at amazon.com. An equally thrilling sequel, named EALISAD, should be ready to be published later this year.
