The first book of the »THE GUAIQUINIMA TALES« series, »THE JESUIT«, introduces the narrator, short-sighted and introverted young Jesuit Xaver von Adelshofen. It sets the stage for incredible adventures to come. The Sacrum Imperium Romanum, the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, a few years after a terrible war that has lasted for thirty years: Xaver has to leave the comforts of a cozy Jesuit Collegium in Bavaria when being caught participating in witchcraft with his lover Magdalena, an older and very experienced healer. In order to hide his identity, he takes on the pseudonym Xaverius Eystettensis and flees into the woods, trusting nobody at first. Rafting and rowing the mighty rivers of a worn-out Empire down towards the sea, Xaver finally makes new friends and learns valuable lessons, strengthening his resolve to get on with his life and to free his mind from any kind of indoctrination. At Amsterdam, an incredible metropolis in the heart of the young and prosperous Dutch Republic, Xaver finds himself in the company of women and men, who live at the forefront of the Enlightenment in a golden age of radical new philosophy. A flirtatious affair with an older but wealthy and highly educated scholar entices Xaver to study the medical sciences and become a renowned surgeon like Nicolaes Tulp. Lacking the financial means, he seeks help from his new friends. He learns to stand up straight with his shoulders back while gathering new insights about the nature of money, the rules of the economy, and the vagaries of morality. Through his new spectacles, which he has made for himself under the supervision of young and ingenious Benedictus de Spinoza, Xaverius begins to see the world in all its crispness and beauty for the first time. But will his splendid fortune last?
